Denmark is banking on mass vaccinations over the next few months to reach its promise to have everyone who wants a coronavirus vaccine vaccinated by no later than June 27th.
The question is, can vaccinations be done in the daily numbers required to achieve that goal? Across the country today will be the ‘storskalaforsøget’ or ‘big experiment’ to begin to answer that question.
Across Denmark vaccination centers will go all out to vaccinate as many people as possible in a single day.
Preparations were underway early this morning to get ready to begin.
Even the Statsminister is out this morning to check in.
The first number to be able to achieve on a regular basis is 100,000 vaccinations per day. This is the number Mette Frederiksen has said can be done right now if the vaccine supply chain was up to snuff. Today is about seeing if we can walk that talk.
If that is successful the next target Denmark needs to reach quickly is 400,000 vaccinations per day. The Danish government has already announced plans to put vaccination contracts to tender to enlist the private sector in the vaccination effort to reach 400,000 daily vaccinations.
Family doctors and pharmacists will also be allowed to administer the vaccine.
If all of those vaccination numbers are achieved, and the vaccine supply chain delivers, it will be a big step towards possibly having something of a ‘normal’ summer in Denmark this year.
Let the big experiment begin.
