The Danish Medicines Agency is trying to clear up misconceptions around the rare side effects linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine. Tanja Lund Erichsen, Head of Pharmacovigilance, says it is not as simple as just referring to it as severe blood clotting. She says it is a combination of low platelets (blood that is not clotting as it should), internal bleeding, and blood clots in unusual places.
As the European Medicines Agency reported yesterday, Erichsen says a possible explanation is an immune response sometimes seen when people are treated with the blood thinning drug heparin.
She says what triggers the symptoms remains unclear. Erichsen notes the European Adverse Reactions Committee has instructed AstraZeneca to carry out more studies. Other efforts to find answers also continue among Danish health authorities, the EMA, and others.

Speaking of, we will find out the results of the AstraZeneca investigation by a panel of Danish experts next week.
Denmark’s National Health Board Director General Søren Brostrøm says the conclusions by the European Medicines Agency yesterday validate Denmark’s decision to suspend the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
"EMA’s review proves that it was imperative to examine the possible correlation between the vaccine and the blood clots and confirms that we demonstrated due diligence in suspending the use of the vaccine in Denmark while the vaccine is undergoing further research analysis and studies.”
Brostrøm says while there were two Danish cases with the array of rare side effects, one of them fatal, everyone else who has been vaccinated with AstraZeneca is now in the clear.
“We can see that the risk of the severe side effects associated with the vaccination is expected to be highest within about 7-10 days, significantly reduced after 14 days, and no severe blood clotting events have been reported after 21 days. Therefore, we estimate that those Danes who have already been vaccinated with the vaccine from AstraZeneca no longer have to worry about getting these rare side effects.”
One of the questions needing clarification next week will be whether the approximately 150,000 people in Denmark who have received a first AstraZeneca shot will continue on to get the second dose.

In order to get on the list you have to meet the age requirement, have received a vaccination invitation, and not yet received a first vaccination dose. It also helps to live near the vaccination centers in Aabenraa, Sønderborg, Esbjerg, Vejle, Kolding, Odense, or Svendborg as you must be able to get there within 30 minutes of getting the phone call. Anyone wanting to be on the residual vaccine list has to sign up every day before 2pm.
