South East Jutland Police have found and removed a suspected explosive device at Billund Airport. In a press release, police say that the device will undergo testing to determine if it indeed contains explosives and if so what kind. Until then they are treating it as if it is a bomb.
A man in his 30s has been arrested. Police say it was the man himself who told police he had an item at the airport containing explosives. That triggered the bomb threat and evacuation. Authorities say the man’s motive is unclear but “so far there is no indication that the person in question worked with others”. Police are also investigating if the man was connected to another incident in Billund on Friday night. He will make his first court appearance tomorrow.
Police say the airport is now free to re-open and people can once again access it. Billund Airport announced on Facebook that the airport is now open and all flights are now resuming normal operations.
Inspector Michael Weiss:
“We have investigated the airport and have now finished our work, and we can now announce to all the travelers who are waiting can now once again gain access to Billund Airport”
The airport, Denmark’s 2nd busiest, was evacuated around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning after what police determined was a credible bomb threat. The airport was closed and all flights suspended for most of the day.
